@thefathippy I remember the two lengths with the LC and LJ—though I might be a bit younger than you as my memories are of the LH Plus 4s, which some people thought were the bees’ knees. I guess in the wake of the fuel crisis it probably wasn’t a bad idea for a flashy Torana. Can’t remember the last time I saw a Torana … probably six years ago when some Holden dealers brought in classic models to tie in with the last Commodore’s launch.

Far too late in the day, East Germany's Wartburg marque gained a four-stroke engine - VW's 1272cc unit, built at the Barkas plant in Karl-Marx-Stadt. The new Wartburg 1.3 was finally launched in 1988, a year before the Berlin Wall was breached. Making the VW engine fit required a new nose for the Wartburg 353 body, though the styling of the saloon and estate car changed little overall. Hopes of an export renaissance for the model were dashed by the DDR's collapse, and production ended in 1991.
