Went to see an interview with Jeff Vandermeer tonight which was brilliant. I have a signed copy of the new book (though I will maybe wait for the audiobook) and managed to finally get my copy of Wonderbook signed!

Every year some friends and I take part in an organised fundraising event for the wonderful Edinburgh Children's Hospital Charity, who do a huge amount to support kids, carers, and families impacted by illness here in Edinburgh.

The event is a special one for us, not just because the cause is so close to our hearts, but because we participate by live streaming video games over a long weekend - aiming for at least 24 hours of live content for our supporters. With our groups roots in and around the video games industry it's a perfect event.

In previous years our group has had great success in raising funds for the cause, but this year is a tough one since we are late in organising ourselves and we are struggling to get the word out on social media. So if you see this post and can spare a little for a great cause then please visit justgiving.com/page/teamcheese and make a donation, share the link with someone you think might be able to donate, or boost this for visibility.

Please also feel free to join our livestreams at twitch.tv/cheesethieves/ on the 11th - 13th of October where we will do our best to entertain our supporters.

Thank you all

If you have ever used Uber Eats, you can't sue Uber when they crash one of their cars into you.

Uber beats crash victims' attempt to try case in court instead of arbitration: A married couple can't sue Uber over severe injuries they suffered in a 2022...

@gsuberland in seriousness mothman is definitely one of the most fun cryptid. I’d say it was my favourite except that I should give that honour to the “Fresno Nightcrawler” for somehow pivoting from YouTube-cryptid to apparent queer icon

@gsuberland why does Mothman need to pass through the TSA if he can fly though?

Iain Banks perfectly explained #GenerativeAI twenty years ago.

Everyone should read this passage.

Quotes from "The Algebraist"

"l am not alive. | am able to give the appearance of life without being alive. It's not especially difficult."

"How do you do this?™

"I am the sum of all my memories, plus the application of certain rules from a substantial command-set. | am blessed with the ability to process extremely quickly, so | am able to listen to what you are saying and then respond in a way that makes sense to you, answering your questions, following your meaning, anticipating your thoughts. However, all this is simply the result of programs sifting through earlier examples of conversations and exchanges which | have stored within my memories and selecting those which seem most appropriate as templates.

This process sounds mysterious but is merely complicated. It begins with something as simple as you saying "Hello" and me replying "Hello", or choosing something similar according to whatever else | might know about you, and extends to a reply as involved as, well, this one."

Captain Picard looks sternly at the main viewer.
“OPEN A CHANNEL TO THE FERENGI VESSEL!”

White text on a red background appears on the view screen that reads “OH, YOU'RE USING AD BLOCK? WE SUPPORT OUR OPERATIONS WITH ADVERTISING REVENUE DISABLE YOUR AD BLOCKING PROTOCOLS IN ORDER TO COMMUNICATE WITH THIS VESSEL.

🔐 Discord introduces end-to-end encryption with Messaging Layer Security (MLS) 🔐

Im really happy to see another large scale MLS deployment. It shows the technology is fit for purpose.

Discord uses MLS for key negotiation in group calls with really fine-grained Forward Secrecy and Post-Compromise Security: A new member of the group cannot decrypt any media sent in the previous epochs, and a leaving member of the group cannot decrypt any media sent in future epochs.

Telltale sign of being at a security conference. Fancy hotel with a bunch of guests carrying big backpacks and wearing big boots. #44con

2024-09-18

I’m in London with a good bit of time before hotel check-in and the 44con community evening. I realised that I’ve never been to the Science Museum so I think that’s the plan.

@chileannick in fairness I think this is my third attempt to stick with Mastodon! So I definitely missed out.

2024-09-18

Slowly finding and following people here that I followed on the bird app, since it seems none of the nice profile scraping tools work now that the APIs seem to be neutered. Think this is going to take a while!

2024-09-17

Figured I’d try out Mastodon again since I’m heading down to #44con tomorrow
