Urban Hermit

I'm an oldish autistic, which blessed me with the ability to think clearly and write well. I'm also a secular humanist and I think God is too. Never doubt the power of irony.

I boost pictures of animals, plants, structures, landscapes, water (always water, and boats!) but right now it is mostly politics - the threats to everything good can not be underestimated. I would like to go back to writing about obscure kites as soon as the deeply stupid people are out of power. Please help.

@Urban_Hermit I lost 36 lbs in 6 weeks without exercising. All I had to do was give up gluten and sugar. Wild how quickly our bodies respond when we remove what's inflammatory.

Now that I have good transportation, a 5 lb bag of potatoes and 3 lb bag of onions is the base most of my cheap meals are built on.

I felt so much better eating potatoes that I recently confirmed I have been gluten intolerant for decades, and am now learning how to eat all over again.

@AnnonBudgie thanks.

I grew up poor in the US, and my whole young adult life was about eating the cheapest food I could find. A huge amount of that, from poverty level to lower middle class, was all noodles and bread for sandwiches. Now I find out my obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and general lack of energy and athletic ability was all down to a general inflammatory response to flour? Well, shit!

I'm having to learn how to eat all over again.

Gluten intolerance is relatively easy to cater for nowadays 😊 (at least in Australia, UK & EU where the labeling laws are strict)

Rice noodles are cheap and a great pasta alternative - experiment with the different types

Buckwheat and corn pasta is readily available (the price can be a problem)

Mac & cheese from scratch with corn pasta is awesome and pretty easy to make

DIY "instant" noodles: rice vermicelli with a gf stock cube and a handful of fresh coleslaw vegetable mix... add boiling water and wait 3-5min 😋 (you could add jerky, chilli)

Quinoa is a good substitute for couscous

Use white corn tortilla as a cheap pizza base.. or just make tortillas

My diagnosis is decades old so I cook (a lot)

I have a lot of quick and easy GF meals - happy to share if there are any you are particularly interested in making

@Urban_Hermit @MarkAsser I went through a similar journey a few years ago. I developed a sudden and gluten intolerance and I had to figure out what I could and couldn’t eat and which brands did and didn’t suck. On top of that I also developed an issue where I can’t have oats either.

The plus side is that I’ve learned to become a good cook and I’ve also been forced to broaden my culinary horizons. It’s not the end, it’s just another path - so to speak. I hope you are able to find some new favorites to enjoy.

A while ago I largely stopped ordering food to be delivered partly because it's really expensive but also because I could no longer abide the human cost.

I did an evening of bicycle food deliver last night and wow that's a really bad deal.

I made $38 over 4 hours with 4 deliveries. I only spent 2 hours actually making deliveries and 2 hours dead-heading or waiting for orders.

I delivered a single burger 7km (of course I had to dead-head 7km back again) for $10 on one delivery.

I did this on a push bike, I rode 34km doing deliveries. I could have hired an e-bike for $89 for the week which I did originally consider but now I'm thinking that would be difficult to make work.

At pay of about $1/km of travel I'm not sure how anyone makes any money doing this. For a car that's the majority of your pay going in to running the car.

Nobody tipped, which I actually think is a good thing. Tipping adds a gambling aspect, reduces the base pay that people will accept and also makes things cheaper for arseholes.

When exactly did we start to think that the point of humans was to be productive, instead of thinking that the point of productivity was to take care of humans?

Trump's entire second term has been driven by a belief that power is, and should be, easy. It proved wrong in Minnesota. It may prove catastrophically wrong here, not least bc Trump believes he doesn't owe allies anything.

Judge Cannon’s final blocking of Jack Smith’s report on the classified documents case — because it would be “unfair” to Trump — proves beyond doubt what the public long suspected: Trump and his cronies committed treason against the United States.

@Strandjunker If law and democracy ever return to America, we need another set of Nuremberg trials absolutely. Things have gone beyond mere "corruption" into, as you said yourself, outright treason.

And all these people swearing fealty to Trump and protecting his crimes are just as guilty as if they committed them with him.

@MarkAsser I have just recently learned that I am gluten intolerant. And a life time of swollen puffiness is melting off me. I have literally lost a hat size, and my blood pressure is suddenly normal.

Yet, when I try to think about what life will be like without ever eating a sandwich, or cake, or pie, or mac and cheese, ever again, I want to cry.

Still, I want to be healthy, and finding a few substitutes that did not cost three times as much seems to be making it tolerable.

I've been avoiding one of my favourite foods for a while, suspecting that it was making me feel a bit sick sometimes. This afternoon I've been experimenting with it. Yep, I feel sick. This is devastating, frankly. But there's not much of it left now so I might as well finish it and take the consequences.

US airstrikes on Iran would achieve only more death and terror. As ever, they would have nothing to do with the welfare of the Iranian people - who are already suffering greatly under government tyranny - and everything to do with Donald Trump's need for spectacle and distraction.
