New England winter storm prep: December:
Fill the wood bins, charge all devices, make sure shovels, snow brushes and ice melter are accessible, stock up on food, make slow cooker hearty meal before, plan on baking, find snow pants, gaiters snowshoes.
NE WSP late Feb:
Fuck it all, just crank the heat and hope for the best. Did someone get more beer? I know where the snow pants are, I haven’t taken them off in six weeks.

Nintendo charging 20 bucks for games that are >20 years old + no modern emulation features is just insanity. What happened to this company...
@stroz Same. I felt weird and wasteful picking up a new laptop only about 1.5 years after my previous one, but it was sort of a "it's gonna be way cheaper now than 1+ years from now" situation and now I'm feeling better about it.
I'm glad I'm finishing my my master's program now - The number of students blatantly cheating with AI in this course is sad. They couldn't even bother to remove the em dashes.
Successfully stood up a Mumble server in Docker. 2010 me would be proud.
@arstechnica Strange how they did not capitalize the S in that "Apple Silicon" notification.
@da_667 To this day, any time I run any kind of scan on something, I say to myself, “Drop a train on ‘em, Edgar.”
I keep misreading Milan Cortina as Milan Cortana. Microsoft missed an opportunity.
All of that AI slop money could have gone to installing equipment for safe air in schools, hospitals, and public transit, powered by renewable energy with minerals mined by people receiving fair wages in a much safer workplace.
We could have avoided the high death toll of COVID and prepared for the next pandemic.
Instead we get even shittier code, abuse images, far-right bots, dodgy tech in healthcare, and even more precarious state of things for artists.
As a data analyst, I've mostly avoided AI up until now. It's pushed more each day at work by people who don't work in IT and who believe AI is worth the water/power cost. I can already see the AI downsides as my company has severe analysis paralysis. Is there a career pivot to consider, or should I get out of IT altogether? Tyia for advice. Boosts appreciated. #noai
If you're considering buying a Vizio soundbar I suggest you just take the cash and light it on fire instead. What a piece of junk.
Removing my ancient Xbox from the entertainment center after slowly and sadly realizing I no longer play Rock Band frequently enough to justify having it sit in there taking up space and plugs.
@wolfinpdx I managed to get to the EmulationStation home screen after an hour of the script doing its thing + I had to make some adjustments (namely add the X Window system back in + configure autostarts). Found one broken menu option, and haven't yet tried to run a game, but I'm surprised I landed where I did.
Attempting to install RetroPie on Debian Trixie RPiOS - wish me luck. We're 45 minutes in and the terminal is still doing stuff.
@xot Ars articles lately have been weirdly focused on AI or subjects that don't have a lot of true significance in the tech world. Something definitely changed with them.
New "byte"-sized blog post: A rant about AI making it impossible to search for information anymore. Alas... https://nicole.express/2026/not-my-casual-hobby.html
