🥦209 groups are growing food and reinventing local food systems
⚡️ 89 are reinventing energy generation and use
🤝 103 are running community hubs and spaces
🦋 112 Transition communities are protecting nature and rewilding
đź›  106 groups are repairing, sharing and reusing local resources
🚴‍♀️ 61 are improving public transport and active travel in their places
đź’ˇ51 are setting up new local economy projects and businesses
4,156 Volunteers are involved in Transition projects across the UK
Reaching a huge 105,000 people.

What if... every community had the support they needed to reimagine and rebuild their world starting local?

Transition. It can mean different things to different people. Here's what it means to some of the many local changemakers involved in our movement - and why it's important...

"What I started it was all about sustainability and climate change - now I know it's about community..."

Community climate hub, SERO has re-opened in new high street premises in Carmarthen, with it’s New2You children’s swap shop, repair cafe, seed library, scrapstore, library of things and lively series of events.

The hub’s aim is to make it easier to engage with climate action and which demonstrates a new kind of economy. One which values and normalises sharing and repairing above consuming, which connects people with neighbours and with lost skills.

Thanks to a Transition Together seed-funding grant supported by The National Lottery Community Fund, last year they were able to employ Siobhan as Welsh language worker to offer their activities and programmes to both Welsh and English speakers.

This weekend, they’ll celebrate St David’s Day with a bilingual crafts workshop.

Time to meet another Transition group. Community Roots Permaculture Project is passionate about bringing food growing opportunities to their working class estate in Bolton.

They run a community garden where crops are shared among the local volunteers and the food bank, regular practical workshops and, funded by a Transition Together seed funding grant, went door-to-door offering to plant fruit trees in people’s gardens.

Steve Jones from the group said: “Growing food is the best tool for community cohesion there is, simply because we all eat food…. We’re not a food bank, but with succession planting, we’re giving away kilos of food. We’re feeding ourselves and people who turn up to the project.”

“It’s about food, climate and people coming back down to earth and having a sense of gratitude. Even now, I’m still absolutely humbled when I go around the garden and pick stuff to cook and eat.”

How can our groups and projects be places that welcome, include and create space for the voices, views and action of young people?

We held a Skillshare on this topic and heard the stories, experience and advice of three Transition groups. If you missed it, watch it back here: youtu.be/ApV8taXtA5k?feature=s

Last week, we were privileged to take a journey to the future with Rob Hopkins.

He shared about his forthcoming book for the first time and had advice for activists on how to give people a window into what a positive future can look, smell, sound and taste like, as a way to inspire and engage folks with the action we need to take to build it.

Watch back the recording of this brilliant session, which ranged from the landscape of beavers to Afrofuturism, music recordings to sound out the future to how art is paving the way for us to imagine different solutions. It is an inspiring way to start your year!

Bridgehouse Gardens community group in South London has been on an incredible journey.

Together, they have transformed a disused, vacant tarmac site into a thriving forest garden and built by hand a new community learning space, The Winslade Barn. Along the way, participants have learnt amazing practical skills, built community and created space for wildlife.

We're building a new online resource hub - a place to share and discover wonderful guides, advice and case studies to help communities create change.
We know Transition groups have a wealth of experience and love to share and help others get new projects off the ground. So to help us get it started, we’re inviting Transition groups to create a simple guide to setting up and running different types of practical projects they have experience of.

We'll make it as easy as possible, by providing a template with key questions to answer and a small fee for your project as a contribution for your time.

If you have a project you think is worth sharing, find out more and fill in our expression of interest form here: forms.gle/3vBrw5pR17Hj8ExZ7

Transition group @playthinkbrink welcomed broadcaster and activist Chris Packham for campfire tea and chat at their meantime use space in the centre of Belfast recently.

Gawain Morrison, co-founder of Brink, said: "Just as it was about to snow, we sat round our fire pit & chatted about this part of the city, the heritage growing project on the site, with our partners Grow NI & quarto, the broken food system, renewables, activism & punk bands. Not a bad way to start the morning."

The project aims to spark conversations and new thinking about how their city of Belfast can transition to a better future. Chris added a message on heritage linen to their story ring: “Winning is not giving up and the fuel is love and rage”
