I may be the most certified person you’ve ever met. Years of IT experience in network management and security. Recently retired from the military. Interested in using creative channels, like games, to teach cyber risk to risk owners.

Cat picture booster. Multi-craftual. Unashamed public knitter.

@Dio9sys @reverseics @neurovagrant it was great fun when I had the chance to meet risk people from other industries because for every scenario we discussed a half dozen people would chime in with “but wait! It gets worse!”

This s less fun when the DM asks “so, what’s the worst that can happen here?” Like, ma’am, do you understand the perpetual state of my brain? Seeing catastrophes everywhere is literally my job.

Katie and I gave Dad the LEGO mineral set for his birthday, and since he’s a geologist he did a comparison between the LEGO versions and the actual minerals from his collection. flickr.com/photos/piedmont_fos

If you're in the US: get all of Pratchett's Discworld for $25.

US only, but the US needs Sir Pterry right now--either as a reminder, or as remedial education on being human.

@Faintdreams I’ve been fortunate enough to have had people explain to me how technology changes architecture (key example: porches became less common with the invention of air conditioning), so it’s a thing I think about more than the average person.

You’re not silly at all (except insofar as you want to be silly 🤪)

@Faintdreams my knee-jerk guess is the evolution of bathrooms.

The furniture developed in an age where you had “a washstand”, not indoor plumbing. Then a tiny closet with running water (where you really didn’t still have room for all the grooming stuff)

And modern bathrooms now have room for all the grooming stuff! (Less helpful if you’re in an older home)

general reminder prompted by my last (CW’d) post but applicable to everyone:

if you’re not part of a research organization with psychology training, a legal department and an ethics board who needs to approve the plan, you’re not “conducting a social experiment”, you’re conducting harassment

Speaking as a parent my current opinion on internet age verification laws is that after the state starts putting the Epstein class in prison en masse then maybe we can start taking anything else they say about protecting children seriously.

Do you know what's not accessible? Writing "a11y" in any article or documentation

I will accept it as a convenience in APIs since developers are lazy and can't spell, but fuck off with using it in text

New post, and this one's definitely one of my weirder ones: it's about how most of the tech industry shows symptoms of something that looks like gender dysphoria.

@munin yuppppp

I’m reminded of the person who a couple weeks ago figured out that just clicking “go away” to all the copilots was taking up a measurable amount of time. So doing things the same way they always did was taking longer. (And no time savings by using the tools because they can’t effectively do those tasks)

@munin a colleague of mine played around with the copilot built into PowerPoint to spice up her slides.

Turns out instead of giving you some objects you can then manipulate into what you really want, it just gives you an image.

Which is how you get shit like this - instead of being able to just edit the text, you’d have to completely recreate the whole thing by hand.

Of course my writing sounds like an LLM. I've been writing technical doc for 40 years. Who the fuck do you think the LLM trained on?

Hello friends, family, supporters, and maker community. I've had to make the incredibly difficult decision to shut down Alpenglow. Even though we had a great fall and holiday season, the short story is that we aren't making enough continuous sales to cover our shop space and employee costs, and it's too much of a gap for any short-term solution to cover. So it's time to call it, and just send out a huge thank-you and hug to everyone who has supported us. More info: alpenglowindustries.com/blogs/

A crocheted series of lumps is laid out next to a dilute calico cat that is stretched out on her human’s lapThe lumps have been reconfigured into a balloon animal dog. Still with cat.

"This hour-long podcast could have been a 5 min blog post"

@munin at work today I discussed with someone who algorithmic decision-making is grounds for a lawsuit in my industry, so having me, an actual human, is just good business.
