Dusya got sick. There was blood on her nostrils and around her mouth. She had incontinence. I took her to the clinic. They ran tests and said it was panleukopenia. I bought the medicine. Treated her for a week. Fed her with a dropper and gave her water the same way. Two weeks later we were already going for walks again.

Dusya was an ordinary kitten born on the street to a stray cat, Musya, and a ginger tom, Archie. Musya once had a home but was thrown out for unknown reasons. Nocka didn’t settle in, no matter how much I tried. In the end I had to take her to a shelter. A good one, paid, clean… but still a cage. I don’t want to leave her there, it hurts to think of it. But right now I just can’t give her the kind of real cat happiness she deserves. For now she’s safe — and I hope someone will love her the way she needs.

When the weather turned cold, I finally decided to bring Nochka home. She refused to stay in the basement, and I wouldn’t have been allowed to keep her there anyway. She didn’t want to go to the other basement with the cats, and people were no longer eager to let her into the stairwell. I brought her home a few times, and eventually just kept her. Soon Nochka stopped looking for her kitten.
