I post mostly about hiking. In 2023 my wife and I hiked from our home in Denmark to France. 3000 km. Now we do shorter hikes and dream about mountains.

#WritersCoffeeClub Feb 3 - What signature marks your work as definitively and effectively yours?

Taking an idea and running with it, then giving up running and stealing a hot set of wheels then driving around an obstacle course at high speed making unexpected turns and doing donuts with the kidnapped idea screaming from the passenger seat.

Sort of like that over-extended metaphor.

Thought of the Day 🤔

It's not a question of whether or not rich people are evil.

No, the question is if they became evil because they got rich. Or if they got rich because the were evil.

I feel the Epstein files goes a long way towards proof of this statement I've been saying for years.

Check out this big gum emperor moth that visited my moth light at home last night, in Ōtautahi-Christchurch, NZ.

I first thought there was a bird flapping in the bushes, before it appeared. This one was pinker than most I've seen, and it happily clambered about on its big fluffy feet.

They're more like Pokémon than real moths.

This fear actually proceeds from an even deeper impulse, the belief that quick judgment thinking (what I call memetic epistemology) is superior to extrinsic thinking.

They trust their instincts more than any other person, regardless of their expertise.

Conservatives and reactionaries believe that their views are true because 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒚 believe them. Evidence isn't needed for "common sense."

This viewpoint is the fundamental unifier of everyone on the right, from atheist ancaps to Christofascists.

fellas, if your savior:

  • can turn water into wine
  • can make bread
  • is risen

that's not your savior. that's a colony of fermenting microorganisms

Ran a short rope protection and security course for some hill walking and scrambling friends of mine today. Included improvised harnesses, Italian hitch, clove hitch, assisted hoist, anchors, rappelling, classic belay, belays, prusicks, basic rescue and more. Hopefully everyone came away more confident about having to deal with an emergency situation. Anyway, it was a lot of fun and laughs in the strong winds.

I'm writing about the Palestine Action hunger strikers at the moment, any of whom could die at any moment, and the astonishing media and government silence surrounding them. The Establishment seems to have become even crueller than when Thatcher was PM.

«Please, pretty please, don't call it slop. Do you have any idea how much money we sunk on this thing? Can you imagine what kind of about-face I'll have to make if this thing tanks for good? Our investors are going to cry so hard when they figure out that we lit their money on fire. So please be kind to this faceless megacorp and don't call it slop.»

I hate that anyone named Melissa will now be associated with this potentially deadly hurricane. I have a friend named Katrina who changed her name to Kat after the 2005 hurricane killed nearly 1400 people.

Maybe we could just name hurricanes/cyclones after the oil companies and the billionaires who profit off them? Have to reuse the names a lot, but we can just add numbers, like we do for Kings or Popes: ExxonMobil III or BP XIX.

What's that thing called when you see someone post something so mind-numbingly wrong you need to go get some facts right before replying, go down a rabbit hole, and 14 months later you're probably one of the top 5% of experts in this niche subject and can't find the original wrong post to refute it?
