@vga256 I cant lie, I rewatch this episode every once in a while - Ghostwriter will always have a place in my heart, and this is like the only instance I ever remember of BBSes being talked about in a show at that time

The first advert for The Secret of Monkey Island in a magazine appears to date from November 1990 πŸ’

Among other things, it mentions a "special" demo that would win prizes, including a cruise! 🏝️

Does @grumpygamer remember what this special demo is?

@craftydifficult I think you can only do the exercises in the containers they've set up on their servers, but you can directly ssh/sftp in and download any files if you wanted to work with them offline, ive done that to make a backup of all my solutions

All the fallout of a cascade failure in my Amiga PSU. Either the main or driver transistor failed and shorted, causing the two resistors on the emitter to burn up, killing the other transistor, and burning out the fuse. I changed out the bulk cap while I was in there for good measure, but every time I thought I fixed it I found another component that had been damaged. At least it was confined to the primary side. My "poor man's variac" lightbulb got a workout for a while though, it was just shorting AC at the start. Not even sure it was worth the repair for a 25 watt supply, but it's fine now.

@davebauerart Fantastic book - I listened to the audiobook version a few months back. That was one technology I was never exposed to back in the day, but I was impressed with how many advancements they had made and how many online features had predated the Internet and BBSes. Really cool stuff, and sad that its not more well known outside certain circles.

@root42 This is a great demo (great sid track too, love the bass) - Censor Design does such good work, I'm always impressed by their stuff

@axeleroy Yup, always a good idea to test your aging PSUs periodically, those aging caps will eventually fail! I'm repairing an Amiga PSU as we speak that blew up on me a couple weeks back.

Been hard at work making door games for Cloudburst Connection (BBS themed adventure RPG). These "games within the game" come in two flavors:

In story mode, the single player doors are fun mini-games that let you win in-game resources and provide enjoyment for your callers. Different callers prefer different games.

In sandbox server mode (where you can run your own real BBS), this also includes real-time multiplayer games like FlashFight: a game where up to 4 players navigate a maze and play flashlight tag, assisted with weapons (light bombs) or items (opponent trackers and speed boosters).

And in Sandbox mode you can even create your own Python based games! CC comes with a full API.

@skippy Back in their heyday, although there were some doors I really enjoyed playing, I really loved the communication aspect the most. For a couple years I had the most popular board in the area just because I would constantly chat with all my users. Made a lot of great friendships through BBSes. These days the nostalgia factor of play games is fun sometimes, but I really love the creative ANSI art, there are some really talents artists out there.

@dirkdierickx Ive watched this movie more times than I can count. It might not be the most accurate at times, but man does it ooze atmosphere and style. Its like the cyberpunk life I dreamed of living back as a teenager in the mid 90s

Finally got a chance to watch the Python Documentary - they did a fantastic job with it, definitely give it a watch if you're interested. I remember first using Python about 15 years ago as a C++ loyalist and thinking "huh, this is neat" - fast forward to today and now it's such a huge part of my life. Most of the AI and data science I do at work, the courses I teach, the team I manage, personal projects - all of these things involve Python in some way. And though it has its quirks like any other language, I genuinely love programming in it - it's powerful yet beautiful in its simplicity.

Crazy busy lately, but I've managed to slip in a little time to finish recapping the A4000 motherboard! I repaired 6 pads using some 28awg magnet wire and finished resoldering all the caps, it's working like a champ now! This weekend going to recap (and fix the known polarity issue) on the A3640 cpu card, and put some new thermal paste on there while im at it.

@forty2 Is that a Hakko FR-301? I love mine, it's easily paid for itself at this point.

@vga256 Great score! Such a fascinating point in time for the Internet. Also, lately I've been seriously struggling with the whole retro (old and new) magazine collecting thing. I have absolutely nowhere to put them so they just sit in stacks next to my bookcases. But that doesn't seem to stop me every time I find a good deal!

I decided to go back to my childhood computing following my disaster with the Transputer.
So I've made myself a 6502 board in a "kind of" pc104 formfactor (i.e. stackable and small).
I know it's been done before, and I'm not doing anything special. I plan to include a basic of some kind and a simple monitor program.
I'm using one of @shonky's "60-fake-50" boards for USB serial.
I've also done a dual VIA board, and I've broken the two 8 bit ports out into "PMOD" connectors.
