I do find it frustrating trying to get non-computer savvy people to #Mastodon - I think it's easy but they don't.
Having worked for large social media companies for far too long, I've been in endless product meetings about the first 5 minutes of:
finding -> signup -> investment or deletion?
That window is small, I don't think Mastodon captures it.
That's fine! It's what Mastodon is & it's what the internet I love was, but most people seem very lazy about new things these days.
@bazkie That's fair, I just kind of want the option to see Threads posts without having to login to Facebook though - It's not their fault that they are on #Threads - They went there to escape #Twitter which seems fairly worthy.
I don't think I have ever actually done it, it's just about restrictions being there that I have no control over, like character limit :)
For 240 years the U.S. has fueled its growth with cheap and abused labor forces that weren't allowed to vote; slaves, prisoners, women, children, migrants, indentured labor (H1B visas), "permanent" residents, and offshore workers.
Ironically, this extremely unethical model is being disrupted not because we suddenly developed a national conscience, but because the current regime has deliberately erased that part of history and so doesn't realize its importance to their own wealth.
But the wheels of progress must keep rolling. We've already seen increased use of child labor, as well as calls to eliminate women's suffrage. I expect prison labor in farms and factories to be a huge growth industry moving forward. And at some point it may occur to the regime that instead of deporting migrants, they should put them in work camps.
Don't comply. Don't stand aside.

I should add that I haven't read the Halifax Examiner's article - As I seem to have become a professional whistleblower, with no chance of being re-employed and zero income for 3 years I can't afford subscriptions over food and meds. I am kind of invested in the future of this #UBI lark :)
What I am working on is an advocacy network for front-line safety workers, you know the people who look at child abuse and murders all day - #UBI would also be a big help there!
2/2 Despite what FOX news hosts wail all the time, humans by nature are not lazy so they won't stop working. But UBI would fundamentally change society.
Although Guaranteed Income will help keep people out of poverty, it's a stopgap under firm government control and doesn't change the nature of work at all.
It will be interesting to see who starts talking GI instead of UBI.

UBI at the right level gives workers a choice where they want to work and what wages they will accept, and extends that to people being able to pick zero wage income and just volunteering or running small business that don't need to make a profit. In a strong sense, it creates the ultimate free market capitalism.

@bazkie I suppose my lifelong goal for a wider Internet doesn't really want to see threads and bluesky (bridges) being fundamentally blocked at server level though. I can see why some would want to, but I'd like to keep the option.
@HalifaxExaminer I really wish that the media wouldn't fall for what seems to be right wing idealogical push to stop people talking about #UBI and instead shift to talking about #GuaranteedIncome.
One of them changes #society and (ironically) provides the ultimate free market capitalism when it comes to employment, which the billionaire oligarchs dread. The other is just yet another crutch to try and temporarily fix society whilst not actually changing anything except for the #poverty level.
