Linux: a free computer operating system family.

Linux was created by a Finnish student, Linus Torvalds, stating in a typically humble manner of Finns that it "won't be anything big and professional".

Replacing for example Windows with Linux means user freedom.

What a weekend at FOSDEM 2026! ๐Ÿ™Œ

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to meet the team, try out the Jolla Phone appearance model, and take a look at the latest progress on the community ports. The hands-on feedback on ergonomics and the excitement around the return of The Other Half really meant a lot to us.

A special thank you as well to everyone who joined the community meetup at ร€ La Becasse. Good conversations, good company, and a shared passion for Sailfish OS. Seeing so many Birds of a Feather come together in Brussels was a great reminder of what this community is all about.

If you want to relive the moments or see more photos from FOSDEM and the meetup, weโ€™ve collected them in this forum thread:

Weโ€™ve just got our hands on the first appearance models of the new Jolla Phone. Having the device physically in hand is an important milestone for us, and we wanted to share it with the community.

So not to confuse: the appearance model does not have functioning electronics inside yet - actual functional samples are to come down the road later.

๐ŸŽ„ 6,000 pre-orders before Christmas. What a pleasant present.๐ŸŽ„

The new Jolla Phone has just passed 6k pre-orders, and it really feels like a shared milestone. Quietly impressive. Very much community-driven.

In the latest forum update, we share hardware progress, details on cameras and battery, cellular connectivity configuration and more. Thereโ€™s also a question to the community about how a future referral program should work, and what kind of rewards would truly make sense.

If you have a calm holiday moment between meals and walks, this is a good read.

Warm thanks, and peaceful holidays to everyone building this together โœจ

@hj @warmbeverageenjoyer

Sure - that is one way to see it. But there are surprisingly many ppl who cannot find their home in any of the free as in freedom browsers - and still want to use a PC computer - so there's that.

Nothing prevents discovering other options later on - as the time goes by - and information about sorts of things you're talking about and are important to YOU, increase.

2025-12-17

@hj @warmbeverageenjoyer

Basically there are just choices for pretty much everyone. If Vivaldi (for example) is the one making someone *looking for automatic AI:less browser* sticking with Linux - it's worth to put there innit.

Have not heard much bad at all about Vivaldi either...

2025-12-17

@M33

Waterfox is there plus even their statement is in the thread..

2025-12-17

@hj @warmbeverageenjoyer

There are many options and browsers (plus their teams) are prone to grow.

Ladybird and Servo based ones in development then again provide a whole new ground. Happening already possibly next year.

2025-12-17

a statement from Waterfox team:

"... browsers are operating systems of their own, and a browserโ€™s job is to be a good steward of that environment. AI, in its current form and in my opinion does not match that responsibility.

... The core browsing experience should be one that fully puts the user in control, not one where youโ€™re constantly monitoring an inscrutable system that claims to be helping you.

Waterfox will not include LLMs. Full stop."

2025-12-17

a statement from Vivaldi team:

"Today, as other browsers race to build AI that controls how you experience the web, we are making a clear promise:

Weโ€™re taking a stand, choosing humans over hype, and we will not turn the joy of exploring into inactive spectatorship. Without exploration, the web becomes far less interesting."

2025-12-17

a statement from LibreWolf team:

"As there seems to have been recent confusion about this, just a quick "official" toot to then pin: we haven't and won't support "generative AI" related stuff in LibreWolf. If you see some features like that (like Perplexity search recently, or the link preview feature now) it is solely because it "slipped through". As soon as we become aware of something like this / it gets reported to us, we will remove/disable it ASAP."

@hj

Firefox derived does not mean "equals Mozilla Firefox" - since Firefox itself is open source; forks can rip out anything they want and go "clean".

2025-12-17

@cynical13

Yes, so user can choose. Regular Mozilla Firefox is making it opt-out (and probably via needlessly technical way - not with a "click of a button").
