What secrets does a pirate graveyard keep? What stories are buried in one of the world’s most famous pirate cemeteries on Sainte-Marie Island, Madagascar – once a major 17th–18th century pirate hideout?
Join us on Monday, 1 December, 1–2 pm CET on Zoom – and find out!
On Monday, the online lecture series SHIPS & SEAFARING 1500–1800, organized by the German Maritime Museum and the Prize Papers Project continues with another highlight.
We are delighted to welcome Jean Soulat, Director of the Archaeology of Piracy Research Program (Archéologie de la Piraterie) and researcher at the LandArc Laboratory, affiliated with the CNRS (UMR 6273 CRAHAM, University of Caen).
Jean Soulat will present one of his current projects, a study of a pirate lair on Sainte-Marie Island, Madagascar. Sainte-Marie was a favored hideout for pirates in the 17th and 18th centuries, and weathered gravestones on the island still bear witness to this turbulent past.
