Hachyderm is the El Paso of the Fediverse
It can be kind of hard to understand how big a server (instance) on the Fediverse really is. I know mastodon.social is much bigger than the server I'm on, but how much bigger, really?
So what if we compare the populations of servers to cities?
I built a tool for that! https://arewedecentralizedyet.online/fedicities/
Let's compare mastodon.social, the biggest server on the Fediverse, to the biggest city in the world, Shanghai (pop 24.9M). In comparison, pixelfed.social is like Ahmedabad, India (pop 6.4M). hachyderm.io is like El Paso, Texas (pop 679K). The server I'm on, discuss.systems, is like EisenhΓΌttenstadt, Germany (pop 32.1K).
Cool but maybe I'm not so familiar with some of those cities. What if we compare to cities in Mexico? (mastodon.social is Mexico City, Hachyderm is Tepic) Or Ontario? (mastodon.social is Toronto, Hachyderm is Caledon).
Play around with this tool, select an area of the world you're familiar with, and get a better sense for how big all these servers really are! Check out what your own server is comparable to!
@jonah I didnβt realize that, I guess that makes sense why my changes to the web service donβt impact it. I donβt have Prometheus metrics enabled because I found it extremely confusing. I guess I should look into enabling that to help track down the bottleneck?
@jonah I enabled stats on the puma service and monitor it with a PHP script that generates alerts when the backlog number gets higher than 1000.
@jonah Iβve been using pgbouncer and itβs been basically magic since running it, I didnβt think it was a database issue because PgHero rarely shows over 50 connections but my web connections (puma) will hit over 1000 active a few times an hour now, sometimes queuing up 10-40k backlogs.
I never had this issue with >30k active users so something must have changed recently with my user activity.
Looking for some advice from #MastodonAdmins
What setting do you have WEB_CONCURRENCY and MAX_THREADS for your puma (mastodon-web) service?
Iβve set it 50 and 20 respectively for a pool of 1000 web processes, but Iβve been getting constant overloading with tens of thousands of backlogged connections.
Do I need to adjust the mastodon-streaming service settings also? I increased my database connection limit to 1500 to handle the connections plus extras.
Any ideas?

I'll keep using Keydropt just to keep it somewhat fair since I know these posts attract a lot of bots.

Not me seeing "I sold my Tesla" and "I quit Twitter" posts in January 2026.
Sorry, but no. You had at least a year, generously. We know where you stand.

So my plan ended spectacularly because I didn't spend enough money to test the TB4/USB4 eGPU. I'm going to RMA what I can and consider this a learning experience. π€£

Decided to go all in on eGPUs this year and finally getting some real data out of them.
I built 2 different test benches (AMD and Intel) with 3 different GPUs (AMD 6600 XT, NVIDIA RTX 5060, and Intel Arc B580) and 2 different eGPUs (Oculink and TB4/USB4).
I've barely even started recording data, but once I'm done I'll probably turn it into a video + blog post for anybody who cares.
