I don't follow back much because I pretty much see all the toots on this instance and on the ham-related hashtags I follow. Or I may follow back from another account that's less ham-centric. This me is pretty much all ham radio. It is my escape.
@jeffKE9V hope you’re joking
If your kids are in band, you can totally justify buying a 30-ft telescoping fiberglass mast from DX Engineering 🤣
NARA is set up at Hamcation, and we'd love to meet you face-to-face. We're dedicated to promoting amateur radio while empowering ham radio operators and clubs across the country. Whether you're already a NARA member or just curious about our work, we want to connect with you.
Hamcation brings together thousands of hams from across the nation, and it's a opportunity to have real conversations about the future of ham radio.

@Edent Sorry, last thought: it’s not unusual for receive performance to be better than transmit performance. It takes power to move a signal through the ether and you don’t have much with unlicensed meshcore. It’s a lot easier technically to hear what others are sending out.
@Edent Yeah, I’m afraid your solar panels might be giving you trouble but I’m also not getting 4km from my repeater with outside Alfa antenna to my node. I would get close to a repeater to confirm settings then try from outside on top of your roof if you can manage. Others may have mentioned, outside will be best for your antenna.
@Edent do you have any metal flashing under your shingles? That could interfere. Do you have any obstructions on the outside of the roof very close to your antenna?
Hams call attic antennas “compromised” but plenty of hams also have success with attic antennas. Have you confirmed all your settings are correct by trying to ping a very close repeater? Like less than 25 meters away?
FreeDV: A Free Digital Voice Mode for HF Radio
FreeDV (https://freedv.org/) is an open source project to create a digital voice mode that is free from proprietary code and infrastructure. There are already digital modes (mostly for VHF) that require specialised hardware and proprietary software to use (D-Star, Fusion). This means they aren’t

@DragonBard oh, is signing up at a hamfest the way to get the cheapest rate? Their magazines and archive are worth *something* to me but they ain’t worth 60 bucks a year.
@kilroy_was_here oh, yeah, that would be obvious low hanging fruit. As you might expect, Minster has the cynical viewpoint that lapsed members always regret it and come crawling back.
After my first year as a ham, I let my #ARRL membership lapse to see how they would entice me into returning. This definitely isn’t enticement lol.
Further, it shows they don’t understand how to retain potentially sour members who might prefer, say, a discounted or free print QST subscription with real knowledge value VS a branded doodad you probably don’t want.
@kr1st 😮 If I ever get on the cover of QST for my antenna, I’m definitely going to make a QSL card out of it! Well done!
This is the QSL I got today for my best DX ever! My signal traveled about 480,000 miles or 770.000 km to reach my neighbor 148 miles/237km from me. 😄
This is for my first ever EME QSO. The QSO took place on 70cm using the Q65 mode on 1/4/2026. It's so cool that these digital modes make it possible for little pistols like me to at least work very large stations via the moon.
#Hamradio bucket list item achieved.
#hamchallenge week 7 - Thank a fellow ham radio operator!
Maybe your mentor or someone you recently talked to or someone who helped you with a problem? Who did you chose and why? Let us know! https://www.hamchallenge.org/challenges/8/toots #hamradio
After a successful @ARISS_Intl contact with KJ5GEW, the radio team wanted to encourage our school champion to keep going on his ham radio journey. So we got him a copy of @kb6nu's No Nonsense Tech exam study guide! Also threw in a spare Baofeng tribander.
Since we all signed the book for him, he can't just give it away. Plus he has a deadline now. 😄

@eighthourlunch I got them on 10m and it was so exciting I ended up writing a whole article about the history of the station lol. Shameless plug: https://k3loe.fyi/2025/09/03/uun-an-open-letter-to/
ARISS ops teams have scheduled work for the Service Module radio after it went out of service late last year.
Listen for the the packet radio on 145.825 MHz and we'll watch for your reports later this week.

Love to see it, welcome!
First rule of tooting (at least I humbly suggest, for the purposes of growing awareness, at least at first) is to use hashtags.
#AmateurRadio and #HamRadio will do the trick and reach people outside this instance who will then see those hashtagged toots in their feed.
