#freakonomics radio had a great episode on measuring other aspects of the economy.
The episode reminds me that "economy" is primarily about the collaboration between people - not just resources
In government there are different levels of "No".
No—it's the law.
No—it's in regulation.
No—it's in our rules and guidance.
No—it's how we've always done it.
No—it's too risky/I don't understand enough about it.
Understanding what level of "no" you're at helps you figure out who you need to work with, how long it will take, and what size effort you need to make it happen. It also helps you keep an eye out for opportunities for change. (2/2)
We all admire Amsterdam for having the vision to replace car infrastructure with bike infrastructure. We see the positive uplift in small business activity, and livability. 🙂👍🏿
Now imagine doing that in reverse. Replace relatively safely walkable and bikeable infrastructure with car infrastructure. In fact, put in freeways. Demolish entire thriving wealthy neighborhoods with freeways that don't serve the neighborhood.🙃
That's what we did to Black folk. That's how we destroyed Black wealth.
This isn't just a Memphis issues. Tens of thousands of "real-time crime" cameras now blanket American cities, bringing their own drawbacks: oversurveillance, unequal policing, wasted money. If they're not deterring crime, what's the point?
“Are we just going to put these cameras in front of everybody’s house and monitor them and see if anybody’s up to anything?”

I’m gonna have to start counting the number of times I hear “AI” in meetings. Cause it feels like an all time high this week.
@ShmosKnows it was a brief intro to Dept heads & CIOs. Previewed a search result for navigating local permitting. Piqued the interest of lots of decision makers.
And here, in the most concise terms I could manage, is why Microsoft's bet on OpenAI as the future of tech is risky, to say the least. https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/01/21/microsoft-office-chatgpt-openai/
We’re already talking about Chat-GPT at the local gov level, which is truly shocking.
2023 is the year I make hosting a habit
As I _once again_ bought more books than I can read over the holidays, I'm reminded of this viewpoint:
Think not of the books you've bought as a "to be read" pile. Instead, think of your bookcase as a wine cellar. You collect books to be read at the right time, the right place, and the right mood.
@timnitGebru I recall listening to this podcast on stress cycles and how the body needs outlets when dealing with negative emotions or it internalizes in unhealthy ways. Imagine they reference relevant research. https://open.spotify.com/episode/6L48OhNvYeIlv7Tir3yij0?si=J8IuOpwMQlKsX7egzFOZYg
I can’t tell if #Andor is as excellent a show as I think it is or if I’m just a sucker for rebellious, anti-colonialism stories.
I’m gonna have to binge it again to confirm. 🤓

For people like me who mostly ignored Musk until he bought Twitter, this is a great roundup of his career.
His prior companies had some advantages that made them successful that twitter doesn't have.

The split second between hearing someone angrily shout “these Africans!” in a mostly white pub and realizing it was an Afro-Caribbean man… WILD! The way my brain was set to curse somebody out 🤣😭 #blackmastodon #worldcup
If it behooves you, instead of thinking any more about Twitter—hit us with some PDFs, some incomprehensible sociology, a fact about your town, some poetry no one cares about, political theory that will never land, obscure social history, climate links, math things, some tech so obscure 20 people use it. We want your inner noise. Just push the gas on your own ephemeralism and launch us into the future.
