@stib @barrengroundcoffee @altbot Hey Stib, sorry this is my bad. I thought I had set the server to give automatic alt text reminders but I must not have saved the settings. Have fixed it now. I had a conversation with @smattymatty, @paulbusch and @ZebKing about introduction packs for new fedi users and I think it’s a great idea. We can include some guidance on Alt text and those services you mentioned. Thx

@chris @Cr_Sky @ZebKing @smattymatty @cabinradio Indeed. They were early adopters and have been very generous with airtime and patience for my various schemes. We talked about NWT.Social back in October but we didn't discuss the prospect of migrating their account . . . . food for thought certainly 🙂

@Cr_Sky @ZebKing @smattymatty @chris I had a meeting with the comms people at the City on Monday and it went pretty well. The case will get stronger as more local businesses come on board and people start sharing local news more regularly. Yellowknife is the sort of place where you can easily add people one at a time through in person chats. It's going ok so far but soon I'll need some help with more active moderation. This role may appeal to new users who want to contribute. We shall see

@barrengroundcoffee @Jeremy

Now I've spent half an hour reading about Yellowknife.

2026-02-12

cbc.ca/news/politics/inuit-nun I’m thrilled this is happening but it’s impossible not to think of the clumsy, opaque, and nimby plagued shit show that we’ve seen play out in the #nwt with the Aurora College university transition. Six years in,the ambition in that project has been so diluted that we may as well settle for a school of homeopathy. #nunavut is going to open a university facility in the NWT before we can build our own. I only hope their kabloonologists can help us get our shit together.

@Amgine @barrengroundcoffee maybe there are other roasters on mastodon? Maybe some hashtags that I should set the server to follow? #roastadon

Well, we've officially been federated.

@Jeremy convinced us to join this corner of the internet, so here we are.

We roast coffee in Yellowknife, live too far north, and think too much about espresso extraction and downtown revitalization.

If you’re here for coffee, civic ideas, or cold weather logistics, we’ll get along!

2026-02-12

@barrengroundcoffee oh boy! Welcome aboard Barren Ground #coffee! Now we’re roasting with gas! What other stuff you into besides coffee? I’ll hook you up. Some of your #yellowknife buddies are here already such as @wrucebayne @NWTrav @EricMcL @ffuite and @ykbooks. You want to know more about the fediverse? Follow @paige @evan, @cwebber there’s much more to the fediverse than just the feeling of total moral superiority. You like cats? Pictures of moss?

2026-02-07

@paulbusch @evan @paige @smattymatty napping is a democratic act. ✊

2026-02-07

@evan @paige @smattymatty @paulbusch ok great :) Mobilizon is the exact thing I'm looking for. Problem solved. You can all stand down. Man oh man these are the times to be alive!

2026-02-07

Hey @paige @smattymatty @evan @paulbusch and other fediverse problem solvers. If a fellow wanted to organize and promote an event on Mastodon, or perhaps connect some sort of event calendar to their local server, what would be the least clunky way to do this? Ideally this fellow would be able to see who has signed up to attend the event and message attendees with updates and so on.

2026-02-07

@ykbooks there are also some great journalists and writers on the fediverse such as
@Daojoan @JuliusGoat, @molly0xfff @reece @carastern
@ProPublica and of course @chloewilliams
@thenarwhal and many many more.
Use the search bar to look for people you might want to follow and let me know if you run into any issues.

2026-02-07

Hey @ykbooks so nice to see you here. Thank you for honouring the legacy of bookshops as nodes of the revolution 😀 . We're a small community in #yellowknife but the fediverse is vast and full of interesting people. Local fellow travellers include @miki_lou, @ffuite, @cabinradio, @EricMcL. For Canadian fediverse insights you can follow @evan, @paige, @smattymatty, @ZebKing, @cwebber @paulbusch

Hey @smattymatty @ZebKing do you know which Canadian municipalities are already using mastodon or other fedi services? I’m meeting someone from the city comms team on Monday and it’d be good to tell them about any other cities that have taken the plunge

@cabinradio @reece not sure if you saw this already. Cabin radio does a grand job of chasing politicians who say they will pay for things.
