⏰🧠 Nerve cells age differently
Researchers led by Professor Björn Schumacher have used the model organism C. elegans to prove for the first time that nerve cells age differently. Using an “aging clock” they developed themselves, they were able to precisely determine the biological age of individual neurons and
Using an AI-supported approach, they were able to identify potential protective substances.

Looking at plots, I sometimes see R² ("R-squared") reported instead of the Pearson correlation coefficient r. While R² = r² holds in simple linear regression, reporting R² alone can mislead by omitting directionality. I have summarized the key differences between r and R² and tried to give a best-practice guide on when to use each:

🌍 fabriziomusacchio.com/blog/202

When to report r vs R^2: r quantifies the strength and direction of linear association between two variables, while R^2 measures the proportion of variance explained by a regression model.

Due to a recent discussion with colleagues on whether and when to use (), I wrote a blog post comparing LMM to other approaches using simulated data. I thought, it may also be useful for others working with hierarchical data structures in and beyond.

ANCOVA interaction slope estimates scatter widely, while LMM BLUP slopes are pulled toward the population mean.

More from Arthur C Clarke's book "2010" -

"Some of the sulphur lakes are hot enough to glow, but most of the light comes from electrical discharges. Every few minutes the whole landscape seems to explode, as if a giant photoflash has gone off above it. And that’s probably not a bad analogy; there are millions of amps flowing in the flux-tube linking Io and Jupiter, and every so often there’s a breakdown. Then you get the biggest lightning flash in the Solar System."

The Galilean moon Io is a world tormented by active lava-spewing volcanoes, as it is stretched and squeezed by the gravitational forces of Jupiter, and the moons Europa and Ganymede.

Is there a global shallow ocean of hot magma underneath the surface or are the volcanoes powered by their own chambers of magma?

A new study by the NADA Juno team, presented at AGU24, indicates the latter, as shown in the graphic below.

Eruzione senza precedenti rilevata su Io

#Io #Juno @astronomia

New protocol from SWC reduces off-target effects in optogenetics 🚥

Light can unintentionally activate retinal cells, complicating results. The protocol minimises light leakage and verifies off-target activity is reduced.

Bitlocker is a Microsoft product that encrypts your laptop hard drive etc. Apparently, Microsoft exfiltrates a recovery key for your Bitlocker encryption and stores it in their cloud, they give it out to law enforcement at request. And of course, they give it out to whoever compromises their system and steals that info. Bitlocker is completely worthless trash. Do not rely on it for information security.
