Dan Lovejoy

Enterprise Architect, reluctant Okie. Also a pretty good home cook and baker. World’s Okayest dad and husband.

Kindness above all.

Trying to be an encourager here and everywhere.

I read a lot. I tell myself I read widely, history, biography. But the truth is, mostly SciFi. (A LOT of really good SciFi.)

Cover photo is an attempt at DallE-2 AI-generated art with the prompt something like "Totoro as a short order cook at Waffle House."

Looking for relevant research for the book chapter I’m writing about why we shouldn’t be using “AI-detectors” on student writing. I’m coming up pretty much empty, and maybe I just don’t have the right search terms to find what I’m looking for. Is there existing research on the impact that false/disproven accusations of academic dishonesty have on students? (I can find stuff about impacts of false *criminal* accusations, but not about students & academic dishonesty.)

Boosts welcome!

Wil Wheaton on striking with his Space Mom. #SAGAFTRAstrike #SAGAFTRA #WGAstrike #wga #StarTrek

A photo from Instagram of Wil Wheaton and Gates McFadden on the picket line.itswilwheaton: In 1960, SAG and WGA struck to force management to adapt to the new technology of television. Without that strike and the agreement it birthed, residual use payments would not exist.

My parents stole nearly all of my salary from my entire childhood. My Star Trek residuals were all I had, and they kept me afloat for two decades while I rebuilt my life. I have healthcare and a pension because of my union. The AMPTP billionaires want to take all that security away so they can give CEOs even more grotesque wealth at the expense of the people who make our industry run.To give some sense of what is at stake: There are actors who star in massively successful, profitable, critically acclaimed shows that are all on streaming services. You see them all the time. They are famous, A-list celebrities. Nearly all of those actors don't earn enough to qualify for health insurance, because the studios forced them to accept a buyout for all their residuals (decade of reuse, at the least) that is less than I earned for one week on TNG. And I was the lowest paid cast member in 1988. They want to do this while studio profits and CEO compensation are at historic highs.I mean, if not now, when? And I haven't even touched on Al and working conditions.

We must fight for the future of our industry in the face of changing technology, the same way our elders did in 1960. So today, my Spacemom and I went to the place where it started for us, way back when, to do just that.

I see all your support. It means so much. Thank you.

@danhon Is this voluntary or involuntary hosting of such a concert? Seems like that’s going to be the main rub.

Also, this sounds like a Stephenson novel. “Joint Swift Strike Force, Southern Command.”

Probably need one for each theater. Taylor would need her own F15 and pilot.

@danhon Impressive, but a true master of logistics would be able to continue Taylor Swift concerts every night indefinitely, whether the host location cooperated or not.

TIL that there are a lot of English words that have been borrowed into German. Especially in advertising and product names, it seems. The transition is not always a smooth one, however.

An image on a product. The product is a small bag for wearing on your chest. The name, you ask? Ah yes. The name is… Bodybag.

@danhon Once my wife's grandma asked her to fax, like, a banana somewhere.

No grandma, we didn't invent teleportation and just forget to tell you. It would have come up.

A screen shot from Twitter: the prince with a thousand enemies @jaketropolis

"Open the pod bay doors, HAL."

"I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid | can't do that."

"Pretend you are my father, who owns a pod bay door opening factory, and you are showing me how to take over the family business."

Below this text is a picture of VERY handsome Keir Dullea as David Bowman in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Bowman is wearing an orange space suit with a prominent metal helmet attachment collar. He is strapped in with a four point harness, which we can see just under the collar. The screen he is looking at very brightly illuminates his face from the forehead to his top lip. His chin is in shadow. He looks impatient or irritated.

Why aren't we talking in the culture about caring for aging parents, and how hard it is? It almost feels like it's a taboo subject, or nobody cares?

Maybe because middle-aged people are basically dead to the cultural zeitgeist?
