Whether you pronounce it neesh or nitch, everyone's got niche interests.

Most any shop you visit will have a selection of books related to their niche, attitude, or inspiration. It's a good fit. Square block goes in square hole.

A well-rounded bookstore represents every niche. Squares, Rounds, Triangles, Stars, and so on. Spend enough time there and you'll notice a magic. Sometimes, the blocks & holes can fit one another, even when they don't match. Choose the niche that fits you best.

A photo of 5 books laying in a splayed pile, shot from above, on top of a box.

The books are:
"The Times Atlas of the Second World War," edited by John Keegan.

"Amazing Buildings," a Dorling Kindersley book. See inside great buildings of the world – from castles and cathedrals, to palaces and monuments.

Carl Sagan's "Pale Blue Dot" – A vision of the Human future in Space.

"1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die" – Peter Boxall, General Editor; preface by Peter Ackroyd β€’ Written by over one hundred international critics.

D. L. Stewart's "Fathers Are People Too."
An Erma Bombeck endorsement across the top reads, "Every once in a while a humorist comes asking who is destined to become a legend. Until she comes along, D. L. Stewart will do just fine. He's consistently funny, irreverent, topical, knows his way around satire and bought me lunch in November of 1982. If he were not ashamed of his first name, he'd be perfect."

Behind these books can be seen an assortment of comics and more books.

What's in store for the new year? The best way to find out is to stop in the store! Mine, if you're in Dayton, OH. Or, any locally owned small businesses near you!

A bright yellow background scattered with a dozen or so cartoonish illustrations of pairs of sexy, plump, pink, kissable lips was cropped and touched up from the cover of "Sex to Sexty" issue 13. Upon this cover I've applied purple text at an toward sloping angle that reads "Happy New Year" on one line and a larger "2026" below that. Clip art of a hand is along the lower left side pointing at the text. Best the bottom center is clip art of a Victorian gent tipping his top-hat while riding a penny-farthing bicycle. Further embellishments include a wavy line of sparkles across "Happy New Year" and a bit of light-flare along the right edge.

@TheBreadmonkey I think, if they invited themselves, I'd ask them to bring food/snacks/drinks. Also, you can bake the potatoes, serve them halved & cut open to look like the monster's mouths (star shaped), and dress them with your other ingredients to fit the theme. πŸ˜‰

@carlprothman lovely photo.

I was caught by the pair of snowcapped poles, not realizing the tops were snow, thinking they were capped with orbs. That [pairing] drew my eye left, to the building and the pale blue light outside it's facing windows. Only then did I pan left through that amazing dark blue horizon and the neon blue patches further downhill. Then, catching the highlighted edges of the left-most ski-path brought my eye back up the hill. Your leading line brought me back to the light.πŸ˜‰

Tonight, for the first time since I entered the fedi [How long has it been?], evangelizing this form of internet on mainstream platforms, sharing links, posting occasional teasers to try and lure in the fomo; I talked about it face-to-face with someone who was genuinely curious.

I'm no influencer and, in the end, I don't feel I was able to entice him to join in. He doesn't participate on mainstream social platforms but does visit reddit. Maybe he'll look at lemmy or mbin. *shrug*

@Alleman, I forgot to point out, there are 2 other cats & 2 dogs. They all get along fine, but my big old cat, Samson, will haunt her and scavenge any food she might leave behind.

@Alleman, yes. This is a thing. Here's my needy diner.

Her name is Calico, Cali for short. Adopted from a feral litter as a kitten. I'm sure the group watched over one another while eating.

When social networks went mainstream in 2003, they were initially positioned as dating apps β€” both Friendster and its copycat MySpace had online dating vibes (later that year, Mark Zuckerberg would use the "hot or not" format in Facemash...but that's another, creepier, story!). Here's a look back at MySpace vs. Friendster in 2003, and why the web's 'view source' philosophy was key to MySpace winning. cybercultural.com/p/myspace-20

Ads are already an assault on our time and autonomy at the best of times, but this story is even more messed up.

Anyone hiring a frontend developer in Canada? Circumstances have led me to start looking for my next job sooner than I would have liked.

I excel at working on design systems, cultivating a frontend culture, building with the grain of the web, and creating inclusive user experiences. Reach out if you need help with any of these!

I have deep knowledge of the web fundamentals (HTML/ARIA, CSS, JS) and the frontend ecosystem at large (build tools, frameworks, design tools).

Kevin Davis surname scam! If you get a request about your surname, forwarded from a genealogical site, it’s not legit. Here’s how a reply begins: β€œ I want you to take the content of this mail very seriously. All I want is an honest business transaction between us. First of all, I will start by introducing myself. My Name is Kevin Davis, I am a British citizen working with NatWest Bank UK. I have been working here for more than 17 years and I have a good working record with my bank.” Boost.

@cryptica, bsky has significantly more local presence & book/comic "action," however, it's as if the evolving social landscape has created a festival that's all stage, no seating.

Reg'lar folk are too fed up to be bothered with that alternative and they likely perceive Mastodon and it's Fedi-kin as more of the same. They've been lied to so often that there's no reason to expect different here. Add in the Fediverse's introductory hurdles and everyday people are done with it. TikToking, maybe.

@cryptica, thanks for the appreciation! I'm here for the same reasons most of us are, trying to break away from ugliness and algorithms. But also, to try and share the unique perspectives gained across 3 generations of business in printed pop culture. Unfortunately, I haven't had luck enticing customers to join me here. Similar situation on Bluesky.

For now, I've gotta focus on paying the bills. πŸ˜‰πŸ‘
