@nicolai @Schafstelze @serge Yeah, in the export markets too, the sort of Jew who looks to buy a high-end German brand probably eats on Yom Kippur. Haredis are poor, and both Israeli and American Jewish materialism are secular-coded.

@nicolai @Schafstelze @serge I don't get it, Jews in Germany are famously on the secular to Reform spectrum.

@CLondoner92 Austria, Switzerland, and the former Eastern bloc maintained their tram systems rather than closing them or replacing them with metros. So there are massive systems, and bigger cities like Salzburg and Brno and Zagreb and Kraków also have very good modal splits. It's a different situation for trams in France and Spain built after decades of closure - the modal splits in the secondary French cities like Bordeaux and Nice are the same as in secondary British cities.

@YimbyEarth Oh, *that* train. Yeah, I can't wait for the Fehmarn Belt Tunnel to open so that I can make this trip without the slow-ass trip the long way around Denmark.

Comparisons of ICE with the Holocaust serve to decenter both groups' primary victims - immigrants and Jews, respectively - and turn them into tiresome moral lessons for people who are neither. The history of ICE concentration camps is rooted in US nativism alone, with Operation Wetback, etc.

Probably nothing, just the Singaporean national security and home minister saying his views on detention without trial have evolved (and not in the direction you would hope)

@Schafstelze @serge Places that expect Orthodox usage on Saturday, like hotels, have one elevator stopping on every floor on Saturday without any need to operate a button.

@capntransit Like what? Governor of New York? Hochul is exactly that kind of Democrazia Cristiana do-nothing, complete with taking credit for solving a problem that only existed because of her (canceling and uncanceling congestion pricing).

@capntransit Democrazia Cristiana strikes again. Do nothing, claim credit for policy pushed entirely by activist pressure, pull rank, engage in comic levels of corruption.

ETA will soon publish a report recommending ways to significantly cut the project's costs, and we previewed some of those findings to Streetsblog.

This is a promising route, but NY simply cannot build the transit it needs without getting its costs under control.

Researchers with the Effective Transit Alliance, who previously convinced the MTA to tunnel under All Faiths Cemetery to speed up service on its proposed Interborough Express, said that even the station at 125th Street and Lexington Avenue station — the busiest planned station in Phase II — will not be 75-feet wide, so none of the stations on the crosstown branch need to approach that width. ETA researchers told Streetsblog that keeping the crosstown stations the same size as the Phase I and Phase II stations could save 15 percent on tunneling costs alone.

Extending the 2 Av subway across 125th St is a great concept, but the current project is deeply flawed:

*At $7.7B for 1.3mi, it will cost an order of magnitude more than similar lines in other global cities.

*Deep stations will waste a lot of time—over 10 min across 125th.

@timbray @ww3real Yeah, and ASEAN already exists, and there were aborted plans for SEATO. But there are a lot of things to be negotiated - for one, if it's just J/K/T/HK then it's too Japan-dominated and also kinda small, so they need Southeast Asia for the bloc.
