It is said that there is no creature as wise as the human being. By applying this wisdom, people have become the only animals capable of nuclear war. --Masanobu Fukuoka

@Vidyala Thank you. I appreciate it.

2026-03-02

I really hate this. This sucks. My mom can't remember the details of her current situation, and gets upset when told what's happening. This isn't how anything is supposed to be, and it's so unfair.

2026-03-01

@vga256 this is pure guesswork but is there any kind of inverter board in it? The ones in ibooks that powered the LCD backlight would sometimes squeal

2026-02-28

@Vidyala I think I would describe Red Tree as "relentlessly fucking creepy and tense but you're never *quite* sure if there's something evil or if the main character is mentally ill / an unreliable narrator" less "Hellraiser" and more "I Saw The TV Glow" but yeah if you don't wanna be scared leave it off the list 😎

2026-02-28

@Vidyala Hey if you're on a horror kick I definitely recommend The Red Tree by Caitlin R Kiernan. I'm due to re-read it actually...

2026-02-27

@Vidyala Thank you! I'm taking a break this weekend for sure.

2026-02-27

@hobbs soon!

2026-02-27

I'm feeling really tired. Not much gas left in the tank.

2026-02-26

@vga256 Oh I need to read this - and thanks for all your MOO-posting of late. I think today's social media/digital communities have a lot to learn from those of the past about what effective and ineffective community-building and moderation look like. Also pedagogy! Which is something I wasn't aware of and is f***ing cool. I'm kind of an amateur student of the history of online communities so this is juicy stuff.

2026-02-26

I'm enjoying the conference but I'm also feeling rather tired and sad.

The control of the computer is getting shifted from you, who bought the computer, to the seller of the computer.

This should not happen.
You should be angry about this.
You should refuse to be controlled.
You should resist.

My dad's in the hospital, he's got 3 obstructed arteries and will likely need heart surgery. My mom's got cognitive issues and is struggling without my dad to help her. My brother and sister-in-law are being prescriptive from 8 hours away. I am doing my best to be there for my mom (with so much help from A, I am truly blessed) but it is a scary time so forgive me if I'm not around much or am irritable when I am. Middle age sucks dude.

2026-02-24

@Vidyala You look like spider-woman in that last one! Really cool.

2026-02-24

@vga256 An instance is a good idea, I think if you want more of these conversations a set of hashtags and a kind of coordinator account would be good. Give people things to follow and places to put their own takes on things. For what it's worth CBC has had some pretty good shows in recent years, Baroness von Sketch, Sort Of, and Workin' Moms come to mind.

2026-02-23

Having a cold is shit. It's been nice hanging out with my mom the past few nights though.

@hobbs same-ish era of anime - much more slice of life than ergo proxy but all 3 shows are linked together in my head cuz of the "wtf is happening" factor

2026-02-22

@hobbs You ever check out Haibane Renmei or NieA_7 ?

The best advice I have for new nerds: Refuse to pay rent.

Don't subscribe. Don't lease. Don't use their cloud. Don't slip down the freemium slope. Don't create accounts on their services.

Buy it once. Run it local. Avoid commercial software.

It'll be a huge pain and you'll be an outsider but it'll be endless, interesting, and hard fun that'll pay you back with a curious mind and an understanding of the fabric of our intellectual infrastructure that will make you light-years more capable, useful, and healthy than the "AI" zombies.

2026-02-22

@vga256 a meaner way to put this is when the AI bubble pops there's going to be a lot of work cleaning up slop coded disasters and that work will belong entirely to honest craftsmen - the amoral grifters will reap what they sowed
